Healthy High Protein Burrito is made lower in calorie and higher in lean protein and fiber. A traditional meal that's made healthier and balanced in nutrition that's easy and yummy! Low Calorie with gluten free tortilla options!
Looking for an easy meal that's healthy, lower in calorie and still is satisfying and filling? You hit the jackpot today!
This Healthy High Protein Burrito recipe is delicious with a capital D. It's also super simple to make!
As always, I'm just swapping a few ingredients to make this recipe higher in protein and lower in calorie without sacrificing flavor!
What Makes This Burrito Recipe Healthier?
Traditional burrito recipes are made with meat, beans, cheese and a flour tortilla. I'm making this recipe healthier and lower calorie by swapping the tortilla for a healthier one and increasing the vegetables while omitting the cheese.
- Simple Ingredients - This recipe has all simple ingredients that are easy to find!
- Lower Calorie - This healthy burrito recipe has 394 calories which is considered lower calorie. The calories are not important though unless the macronutrients (protein, fat and carbs) are well balanced which this recipe is!
- High Fiber - There's 17 grams of fiber in this recipe. Fiber is important for weight loss, satiety and also for preventing disease development. The majority of individuals are very deficit in fiber!
- Higher Protein - There is 37 grams of protein in this recipe from the lean ground beef and the black beans add a little more protein. Remember black beans are a carbohydrate that contain some protein. Lean protein is very important for weight management, aging and for keeping hunger and fullness hormones satisfied. I always see my clients deficient in lean protein.

How To Make A Lighter Burrito Wrap With Lean Ground Beef
Here's how to make a burrito wrap with fewer calories and higher in lean protein! For the full list instructions and nutritional information, scroll to the bottom of this post.
Step One - Brown the lean ground beef in the skillet with the taco seasoning. Cook until the meat is no longer pink and then drain the meat.
Step Two - Add the red onion, jalapeño, tomatoes, black beans and corn to the skillet. Cook until the veggies are soft then add the cooked meat back to the skillet.
Step Three - Divide the meat and veggie mixture into 4 portions and add each portion to a low carb tortilla wrap (or your wrap of choice).
Step Four - Roll each tortilla around the beef and veggie in the wrap then place on the skillet to brown the tortilla. Turn the wrap several times until browned all around. Serve with salsa and enjoy!
Can You Bake A Burrito In The Oven?
You can bake burritos in the oven! To bake burritos in the oven heat the oven to 350 F and place the wrapped tortillas with the beef and veggie mixture already in them onto a sheet pan.
Bake in the oven approximately 15 minutes or until the outside of the wrap has slightly hardened.
What Tortilla Wraps Are Healthiest For Burritos?
The healthiest wraps for burritos are ones that are slightly lower in calories and higher in protein. They should also be something you enjoy!
Because this high protein burrito recipe is already higher in fiber from the beans, it's not as important to find a high fiber wrap for this meal.
Remember getting healthier and losing weight is about finding simple food swaps that are a level up from where you are today and something you can see yourself doing until the day you die!
Here are a few healthier tortilla wraps I recommend: low carb tortillas, egglife wraps, zero net carb tortillas, whole grain tortillas.
What Are The Best Gluten Free Tortillas?
The best gluten free tortillas for burritos are again ones that are lower in calories and higher in fiber.
Note that grain-free tortillas and almond flour tortillas tend to be lower in fiber and higher in calories (as almond flour is a fat and fat sources contain more calories than protein and carbs).
Here are the gluten free tortilla wraps I recommend: grain-free tortillas, gluten-free high fiber tortillas, chickpea flour tortillas.
What To Serve With Healthy Burrito Wrap?
This healthy burrito wrap can be your meal for either lunch of dinner. Here's some ideas of what to serve with your healthy burrito!
- Salsa
- Avocado or Guacamole
- Small Side Salad with mixed veggies
- Side of cooked veggies like roasted broccoli or roasted cauliflower
Substitutions For Low Calorie Burrito
Here are the substitutions I recommend for this recipe. As a reminder, if you substitute an ingredient it will change the nutritional values from what you see in the recipe card below.
- Lean Ground Beef - Ground turkey, ground chicken, lean ground pork, tofu, tempeh or shrimp could easily be substituted for the beef in this recipe.
- Red Onion - You can substitute with a white or yellow onion instead.
- Jalapeño - If you do not like jalapeños, you can omit it. I remove the seeds to keep the heat down.
- Cheese - I omitted the cheese from this recipe to keep the calories lower. You could certainly add a little if you like!
- Vegetarian - Substitute the lean ground beef for tofu or tempeh.
- Gluten Free - All the ingredients in this recipe are gluten-free except the tortilla. Simply swap the tortilla for a gluten-free one! Here are the ones I recommend: grain-free tortillas, gluten-free high fiber tortillas, chickpea flour tortillas.
- Black Beans - Canned pinto beans, white beans, green peas or cooked lentils could be substituted. If beans or peas don't work for you, you can omit them.
- Corn - Riced broccoli or cauliflower rice could be substituted or you could omit the corn.
- Tortilla - I used a lower carb tortilla wrap for this healthy burrito recipe. Here are more tortillas I recommend: low carb tortillas, egglife wraps, zero net carb tortillas, whole grain tortillas.
- Tortilla-Less - Make a bowl and swap the tortilla with a bed of lettuce instead!
- Taco Seasoning - You can purchase taco seasoning at the store or follow the taco seasoning from this taco bowl recipe instead.

Delicious recipe, I’m just curious how this only makes 4 burritos, too much filling for the wraps,. Looking forward to leftovers on a bed of lettuce !
Nick says
This is a great recipe. Healthy and tasty. But two questions:
(1) How did you calculate the nutritional info? When I ran the same ingredients through MyFitnessPal, I calculated 474 calories and 47 grams of protein. Did you subtract a bit to account for draining the beef and beans?
(2) What size tortillas are you using? The Mission tortillas you linked to on Amazon are somewhat small, requiring me to split the burrito contents into two tortillas (which increases the calorie count by another 70).
Teresa says
Wow - that’s one huge burrito! Delicious too! Will definitely be in my weekly rotation!
Levi says
what equipment did you use
Megan says
I'm not sure I understand the question. The instructions state to use a skillet. Is there something you are specifically wondering about?
Sarah says
I've seen people making bulk burritos and freezing them lately, do you think these would freeze ok? Or would they just turn into a soggy mess? I'm thinking defrost in the fridge and then pop in the airfryer to crisp up
Megan says
It might work if you use an air fryer or oven to reheat them. I have not tried it myself.
