Ingredients

Ingredients to make a healthy broccoli salad with cauliflower on the table.
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower: Add a mix of textures, and nutrients with a mild taste and satisfying crunch. I wouldn’t recommend substituting the broccoli, as it’s key to the dish, but you can swap cauliflower with more broccoli, carrots, or Brussels sprouts.
  • Bacon: Adds a signature salty, smoky flavor and crisp texture. If you prefer, you can substitute with cooked turkey bacon, Canadian bacon, or tempeh. You can even omit it entirely for a vegetarian version!
  • Red Grapes: These bring a burst of juicy sweetness and a fun color to the broccoli and cauliflower salad, balancing out the savoriness and adding a refreshing touch.
  • Greek Yogurt: The creamy base for the dressing, providing richness without the added fat and calories of traditional mayo or sour cream. If you prefer mayo, feel free to swap it out, or for a high protein option, blend cottage cheese as a I did in this higher protein Alfredo recipe.
  • Sunflower Seeds: Add a satisfying crunch and nutty flavor to the dish. You can swap them for pine nuts, sliced walnuts, pecans, or almonds—or omit them if preferred!

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

Variations & Dietary Modifications

  • More Fruits and Veggies: Add more color and texture by incorporating sweet dried fruits like raisins or cranberries. For extra crunch, toss in some diced cucumber or bell peppers.
  • Give it a Kick: Bring some heat by mixing in sliced jalapeños, a drizzle of hot sauce or Sriracha, or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
  • Double the Protein: Turn this cauliflower broccoli salad side dish into a full meal by adding extra protein! Try diced grilled chicken, turkey, hard-boiled eggs, or even chickpeas for a plant-based protein boost.
  • Make it Dairy-Free: To make it dairy-free, swap the Greek yogurt with mayo or dairy-free yogurt. For a lactose-free option, you can use lactose-free cottage cheese (just blend it before adding so it has a smoother texture).

Expert Tips

  • Let it Chill: For the best flavor and texture, chill the salad for at least 1 hour before serving. If you have time, chilling it longer (up to 3 days) will enhance the healthy broccoli cauliflower salad even more!
  • Uniform Florets: Cut the cauliflower and broccoli into uniform pieces to ensure even coating with the Greek yogurt dressing. This also helps make the salad more visually appealing and easier to eat.
  • Storing: Store the salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It will get soggy if kept longer, so be sure to enjoy it within that time frame. This salad doesn’t freeze well, so it’s best to keep it fresh in the fridge.

Recipe FAQs

Should I use raw, frozen or cooked broccoli in this salad?

I recommend using raw broccoli and cauliflower for the best texture and flavor. If you prefer slightly cooked veggies, you can blanch them for just 1 minute. However, I don’t recommend using steamed, roasted, or frozen vegetables, as they may alter the texture of the salad.

Is this cauliflower and broccoli recipe good to make ahead?

Yes! You can prepare this salad up to 1 day in advance. For longer storage, refer to the storing instructions above for the best results.
