I get a little anxious when someone in my personal life asks me something health, fitness or photography related. Take the PT guy who's been coming to my house rehabbing me from hip surgery.
He wanted to see my photography and literally, I wanted to hide under a rock and die. That sounds stupid, but I feel that way anytime someone asks me that.
I guess part of me isn't yet comfortable being seen as an expert and willing to put myself out there for others to judge. After all, these are things I L-O-V-E doing. How could I be an expert in something I like doing so much?
This relates to this Turmeric Pumpkin Spice Coffee Syrup because a friend recently asked my opinion on pumpkin spice lattes. She's been drinking them for years and loves them, but is trying to lose weight. These questions make me feel the same way as the ones about my photography.
Unsure. Unsure, if I'm willing to share my knowledge with my personal life people. I know, I'm weird. You don't have to tell me this.
I told her I'd give her my honest opinion, but made her promise she wouldn't hold it against me. Meanwhile, my heart was racing out of my chest as I was explaining to her my many concerns with PSL's.
From the lack of real pumpkin, high calorie count (260-420) to the 40% DV of saturated fat and mountain of sugar. Let's not even talk about the inflammatory response, blood sugar spike and potential weight gain that comes with this fancy, high priced drink.
Basically, I told her if she wanted to gain weight it was a awesome option {<- sarcasm at it's finest}.
The look on her face when I told her this was so sad. It was as if I killed her puppy and it nearly broke my heart. Thankfully, we're still friends.
Believe me when I say I know exactly how she felt though.
That gut wrenching feeling of giving up something you love for your health which more often than not, we won't give up unless we have a suitable alternative slammed immediately in our face. Hopefully, this Turmeric Pumpkin Spice Coffee Syrup helps those of you in similar situations.

Thank you for this recipe Megan - my mom and I are obsessed with it!! Would you consider doing a spiced chai recipe with almond milk? I love a good "dirty chai latte", but as I'm sure you know they tend to have a ton of added sugar. I'd love to see what you come up with!
Megan says
Aww that's so sweet. Thanks for the great idea! I'll see what I can do!
Eridani says
Hi! I'm French and we don't use "pumpkin spices" but I discovered this at Starbucks and now I crave for it.... Would it work with all kind of pumpkin, or do you recommend a specific one?
Megan says
Any kind of pumpkin would work. If you don't have pumpkin spice, you can always use cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom in place.

I’ve pinned this to my favourite web snacks and drinks board.
I have to confess that pumpkin spice latte is something that I’ve never tried yet Megan. I’ve only ever had a sip of one, and I thought that too sweet for me.
This turmeric pumpkin spice coffee syrup sounds much healthier though. And I love your pumpkin themed photographs too!
Megan says
Thank you so much Neil! You made my day. 🙂
Lauren says
Revel in your awesomeness Megan because you indeed are awesome!!!! This syrup looks fantastic!
Are you going to include swimming and stationary cycling/spin in your rehabilitation exercise plan too?
Megan says
Yes! I've been swimming and cycling for two weeks now. Even lifting weights. Basically I am doing everything I did before, I just can't walk on my own yet.

LOVE THIS & you being honest! I honestly can't believe people still don't know how calorie dense & fat laden these drinks are... but I guess many don't read about it or the stats....
I think you should be proud of all your accomplishments!!!
Hope you are feeling better day by day!
Megan says
I'm glad someone appreciates my honesty! I have a hard time holding back obviously. Things are getting better, just not as fast as I would like them. LOL
Rachel @ Bakerita says
I love that created a healthier PSL alternative! I don't get them ever because of how much sugar they have, but still crave the pumpkin spice flavor sometimes. This is the most perfect option for those days. Love that you used turmeric for color!
Megan says
Turmeric is so much fun to play around with in recipes.
Blair says
This is SO great! I'm obsessed with PSLs, but I rarely have them because I know they're not exactly healthy! Plus, I have a Costco-sized bottle of turmeric in my pantry that desperately needs some attention. 🙂 So glad that you shared your knowledge with the internet!
Megan says
Pint sized turmeric?!? How did I not know there was such a thing? You must really love turmeric. Hope you get to try out this homemade PSL.
Kelli @ Hungry Hobby says
OMG welcome to my life..... people ask for your opinion but they don't want the real answer.....
Megan says
Yeah, I'm starting to get that too. Definitely a tough position! But you know you can always tell me anything. 😉
Megan - The Emotional Baker says
I understand completely, Megan! Most people don't even know about my blog because I'm not confident enough to share it. I wouldn't be afraid to share this syrup though! I love the addition of turmeric - what a great alternative 🙂
Megan says
Why does it feel like a shameful thing? I wonder this all the time. Good to know I'm not the only one who feels that way.
Carla says
I am in to make this. I've been saying for far too long I need to add turmeric into my SOMETHING ANYTHING.
This is it.
Megan says
