Why You Will Love This Strawberry Donut Recipe

  • So Easy to Make. We skip the frying and bake these donuts in the oven so there is way less mess. Even better, the donuts mix up in just minutes. This means you don’t have to wait too long for freshly baked donuts.
  • Healthy Treat Suitable for a Wide Variety of Diets. These strawberry baked donuts are lower in sugar, low-calorie, gluten-free, and dairy-free.

Ingredients

Ingredients to make strawberry donuts on the table in bowls.
  • Egg: The egg is going to provide some structure, flavor, and moisture to the donuts. Make sure it’s at room temperature when mixing.
  • Extra virgin olive oil: Moistens and tenderizes the donuts. You can also use another neutral-flavored vegetable oil you like.
  • Milk: I am using unsweetened almond milk to keep these baked donuts dairy-free. You can use regular milk or another non-dairy milk if you prefer. I recommend making sure it’s unsweetened and unflavored.
  • Vanilla extract: I always use real vanilla instead of imitation. I find the flavor is much better and more natural.
  • Oat flour: Make sure the brand you buy is gluten-free if you follow a diet without gluten. If you do not follow a gluten-free diet, then you can use regular oats. I have not tried other flour with this recipe so I cannot say for certain if they will work.
  • Coconut sugar: Sweetens at a lower glycemic index than brown sugar. Feel free to use brown sugar or another sugar you prefer.
  • Baking powder: Gives your donuts a bit of lift and a lighter texture.
  • Fresh strawberries: Use fresh ripe berries for the best flavor and texture.
  • Chocolate chips: These are to melt and drizzle over the doughnuts. I prefer to use mini chips because they melt more easily. Use a dairy-free dark chocolate chip to make them dairy-free.

Variations

  • Swap the berries. You can use any other type of berry you love to make this recipe! Just be sure to chop up larger berries like you do with the strawberries.
  • Use white chocolate. White chocolate and strawberry go together great so feel free to swap the chocolate chips for your favorite dairy-free white chocolate.
  • More chocolate chips. Stir in a 1/4 cup of chocolate chips into the donuts for more chocolate flavor.

How to Make Strawberry Donuts

To get started, grab all your ingredients, preheat the oven to 350 F, and prepare your donut baking pan with a good spritz of cooking spray.

Egg, milk, and vanilla in a mixing bowl on the table surrounded by strawberries.

Step 1: Combine wet ingredients. Whisk together the egg, oil, milk, vanilla extract and sugar in a mixing bowl.

Dry ingredients in a separate bowl on the table surrounded by strawberries.

Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients. Combine the flour and baking powder in another bowl and whisk together.

Flour and other dry ingredients added to the mixed liquid ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Step 3: Make the batter. Add the flour to the wet mixture and stir until the ingredients are mixed together.

Step 5: Transfer to baking pan. Spoon the batter into the donut cavities of your baking pan dividing the batter equally for 9 donuts.

Step 6: Bake. Place the strawberry donuts in a preheated over to cook for 10 minutes at 350 F. When they’re done, cool the donuts for 5 minutes in the pan before flipping the pan over a wire cooling rack to remove the donuts. I ran a small plastic spatula around the edges first to help release them from the pan.

Step 7: Melt the chocolate. Boil a pot of water and place a glass bowl with the chocolate in it over the top. Stir the chocolate continuously until melted.

Step 8: Drizzle. Use a spoon or whisk to drizzle the chocolate over the top of the donuts.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy these strawberry cake donuts for a sweet breakfast or as an indulgence in the middle of the afternoon or after dinner.

For breakfast, I prefer to pair these strawberry donuts with a little protein like a Greek yogurt smoothie or some chocolate protein chia pudding.

On the weekends, they make the perfect pair for a hearty breakfast or brunch with friends. Enjoy them with this crockpot egg omelet or sheet pan breakfast pizza.

As a snack or dessert, they’re quite tasty on their own or you can top them a scoop of ice cream or sip on a low calorie pumpkin spice latte.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t Over Mix the Batter. Mix just until everything comes together.
  • Adding the Batter to the Pan. The batter is pretty thin and a spoon works great for transferring it to the donut pan. Be sure that you divide it up evenly to make a total of 9 donuts.
  • Drizzle the Chocolate. Dip a spoon, whisk, or fork into the chocolate and then gently swing it over the donuts in different directions to give it a drizzled effect. Repeat using all the chocolate.
  • Baking Pan. If your pan only holds 6 donuts, go ahead and cook the first five. The remaining batter will sit fine to wait for them to come out of the oven before making the remaining four.
  • Yield. This recipe makes 9 standard-sized donuts which area bout 3.25 inches across. If your pan makes larger donuts, you will get fewer donuts and may need to bake them longer.
  • Store. Store your donuts at room temperature for up to two days. To extend their shelf-life you can refrigerate for up to five days or freeze them for up to three months.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use frozen strawberries?

Sure you can. Let them thaw out slightly in order to chop them and then add to the batter. They don’t need to be completely thawed before adding them to the batter.

Can I make my own oat flour?

Of course. Place rolled oats (make sure they’re gluten-free if needed) in a food processor or blender. Pulse in long bursts until the oats break down into a texture similar to flour.

Haha, been there. It’s bizarre. Even when someone is like “oh, I follow your blog” or “oh, I made your….” whatever it is. It’s so weird! I feel the same too, like not embarrassed per say but uncomfortable knowing certain people read my blog I guess. It’s easy to sit behind your computer and just press publish, or be on social…and forget it’s actually going out into the world! Anyways, your site rocks..so nothing to worry about!

    1. Megan says:

I’m glad you can relate. It’s so easy to forget that you’re putting things out into the world. Hopefully to make it a better place. Thanks Deryn!

I have been teaching hundreds of people a week in classes and just recently started mentioning my blog. Before that, people would find it on their own and then tell others in the class hahaha! You have NOTHING to be embarrassed about, that’s for sure. Rock it with confidence! And these donuts sound DELISH, skinny and all! 🙂

    1. Megan says:

How do you mention it? I would love to share it, but honestly not sure how to do it.

  4. Kelli @ Hungry Hobby says:

First, you are BEAUTIFUL. Second, why are you not telling your spin classes about your blog? Also, I had a student in my class that followed my blog that was the weirdest thing that has happened to me. Are you going to send me some of these for national donut day tomorrow? Random thought train end.

    1. Megan says:

      I don’t know why I don’t tell them? I guess I should start!

  5. Emily @ Pizza and Pull-ups says:

These little donuts are too cute! I think I will try making these with the kiddos, they love donuts and I like that this would be a healthier option for them.

I never think to do the strawberry and chocolate flavor combo, even though I love chocolate covered strawberries! I have a donut maker and I usually resort to lemon, but this will be my next one to try!

    1. Megan says:

You must try. It’s my favorite combo!
