Is your metabolism slow? Has your metabolism slowed down because of your age?

Your metabolism isn’t slow or broken and menopause isn’t to blame for why your metabolism may have slowed down, and why you’re not losing weight.

The metabolism is designed to adapt so that if you were on a deserted island your body would conserve energy to keep you alive. Your body doesn’t know the difference between you trying to lose weight and being on a deserted island.

This process is called metabolic adaptation. Studies show that by reducing calorie intake may not help you lose weight if you are in that reduced intake for a prolonged period of time.

If you’ve dieted in the past, lost weight then plateaued and got stuck, metabolic adaptation is why. This is why cutting calories works until it doesn’t.

Studies show calorie reductions can increase appetite stimulating hormones leptin and ghrelin making you feel hungrier and increase your body weight to its original size. This causes some people to subconsciously eat more as a result of these hormones.

hormone imbalances as the female body is very sensitive to getting too little food.

This is why dieting on 1200 calories eventually backfires for women and taking a weight loss approach that keeps blood sugar regulated to control hunger hormones is always best for women over 35.
