How to stop restricting food isn’t about having more willpower. It’s about changing the beliefs that keep you trapped in the diet cycle.

For over 40 years, my nutrition client Samantha believed her body was a problem she needed to fix. Every new diet promised the answer, but restriction only made the foods she loved feel even more irresistible.

In this episode of Dish On Ditching Diets, Samantha shares the moment everything changed.

Instead of avoiding cake, counting every calorie, or striving for perfection, she learned how to give herself permission to eat the foods she loved while building habits that naturally reduced cravings.

One of my favorite moments is when she says:

“The thing that was appealing to me was that I couldn’t have it. Once I told myself, ‘You can have anything you want,’ the allure went away.”

She also opens up about letting go of perfectionism, healing decades of “stinky thoughts,” and replacing self-criticism with habits that helped her feel strong, confident, and in control around food.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly starting over on another diet or wondering why you can’t stay consistent, I think you’ll see yourself in Samantha’s story!
