Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is a chocolate lovers dream! Made with wholesome ingredients and with zero added sugar or oil, this gluten and dairy free banana bread is the ultimate sweet treat! Gluten Free + Low Calorie
Calling all chocolate lovers or should I say banana lovers?!? Either way you will fall in L-O-V-E with this Ultimate Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread.
Before we dive into thick and creamy, chocolate-y bread let me wish you a Happy Memorial Day! Hopefully you've been loading up on summertime food and fun. Today is business as usual for me. Apparently when you're in school you don't get holidays. Boo!
We do get two weeks off this year, one in July and one in December so that makes up for it and I'd much rather have an entire week off than a measly day. I can make a lot more recipes in a week!
I really can't complain though. Later this week I'm headed to Chicago for a blogging event and to visit my best friend and her family. I guess you could say next weekend is my Memorial weekend. 🙂
So I've been a busy bee all weekend working ahead on school and work so I'm not bombarded when I get back. Let's be real though. No matter how hard I try, that's gonna happen.
It really is a miracle that I can bake anything because I'm so impatient. In fact, I'd be willing to bet I'm the most impatient person on the planet. That's probably why I subconsciously stick to muffin making because those little nuggets take half the time to bake as breads.
You wanna know something funny about this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread? I don't even like bananas. Yep! You heard me right. This zucchini loving, nutrition obsessed, healthy living girl cannot stand bananas.
My stomach does flip flops just thinking about them. Blech! There's something awful and gross about the texture of a banana, but put them in a muffin or in a bread and I'm all about riding the banana train!
You see...I am far from perfect. This is why I'm into baking and nutrition so I can figure out how to eat the good stuff without even trying.
Guys, this is the Ultimate Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread and you can thank mother dearest for the addition of the chocolate extract to this bread that was a gift.
That little extract makes this banana bread pop with extra luscious and oh, so chocolatey goodness.
So grab your chocolate and bananas peeps! It's time to get your baking pants on because this is one banana bread you need to make.
Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
Ingredients
- 3 small ripe bananas
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon chocolate extract or vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 1/4 cups Gluten Free oat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips dairy free
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9-inch x 5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray or place parchment paper in it.
- To a blender, add the bananas, vanilla extract, honey, chocolate extract, applesauce, and blend until smooth.
- Add the oat flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt and blend until well combined.
- Remove the batter from the blender and place in a bowl. Fold the chocolate chips into batter by hand to disperse evenly throughout the batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Spread the batter evenly with a rubber spatula
- Bake 30-35 minutes until a toothpick can be removed from the center of the loaf clean.
- Cool the bread in the pan 30 minutes on a wire rack.
- Remove from the pan, cut into 12 slices and devour. Store in the refrigerator in a container to stay fresh up to a week.

Hi there! I loved this recipe and it turned out AMAZING but I was wondering if I could replace the bananas with pumpkin purée to make it pumpkin bread? Thank you!!
Megan says
Glad you enjoyed the recipe! I have not tried it with pumpkin. I do have a pumpkin bread recipe here: https://skinnyfitalicious.com/healthy-pumpkin-oat-bread-gf-low-calorie/
Tara says
Yay thank you so much! I will be making that today!! When I made the banana bread, I left out the chocolate chips and used almond flour instead. So so yummy!!
Taylor says
This is only 12 calories per slice?!
Megan says
The recipe card says 136 calories per slice.
Amy says
Do you have the total nutrition count and serving size? ( carbs , sugars and fats?)
Megan says
It's in the recipe card!
Melanie says
Is the chocolate extract necessary or is it okay to leave it out? Any substitutes for chocolate extract? I am having trouble finding it at the grocery store.
Megan says
You can chocolate extract here! You could also use vanilla extract.
Karen says
So that would be then 2 tsp. of vanilla extract altogether (1 tsp to replace chocolate extract and the other tsp of vanilla extract that is listed on the recipe card?
Megan says
I recommend just omitting the chocolate then and only using 1 tsp of vanilla.

Delicious!! I put in 2 tablespoons of white sugar and 1 tbsp of b sugar instead of honey and 3 tbsp of chocolate chips instead of 1/3 c. It came out absolutely delicious! Amazing recipe and definitely a keeper!
Megan says
I'm glad you liked it. Just want to clarify that white sugar is highly refined and linked to the development of disease. Using white sugar in the recipe actually makes it unhealthy. Not saying it's wrong, but I don't want someone else reading this to interpret that as a healthy substitution.

I have this in the oven right now, but just curious as to when the honey is supposed to be added. It's in the ingredients list, but not in the steps so when everything was mixed my batter was really thick. I added it at the very end and it got better, but just wondering if I should add it earlier next time.
Megan says
Hey there! It should be added with the wet ingredients. When in doubt, wet with wet and dry with dry.

Mmmh, chocolate and banana goodness! This sounds great. Like you, I'm not a fan of bananas on their own - keep them out of the fruit salad! - but they're a must in oat bran for me.
Impatience is definitely one of my worst traits but at least I can blame genes here.
Megan says
Good to know I'm not the only one that feels that way about bananas. Apparently, we have a lot in common!
Blair says
Sounds perfect! I love that there's not a ton of added sugar, so I can feel good about feeding it to my boys. Delicious!
Megan says
I've been trying to keep sugar low these days. I feel so much better when I do!
