Low Sugar Ketchup! An easy homemade 5 minute ketchup recipe that's free of additives and low in sugar. Perfect for dipping and topping all your favorite foods with! Paleo + Vegan + Low Calorie + Gluten Free
When I started losing weight, one of the things I gave up was ketchup. I don't generally condone giving up foods, but for me it was the right thing to do. I was traveling weekly as a consultant and the only ketchup available to me on the road was the high fructose kind.
When you're trying to lose weight, balancing insulin and reducing sugar intake helps with fat loss so I simply avoided it.
Truthfully, I never missed it. When you stop eating certain foods and learn to love to eat healthier foods, you stop craving all the sugary, carb overloaded things. It wasn't until my boyfriend pointed out how I never eat ketchup that the thought of finding a healthier version came to me.
So I shopped around looking for ketchup that wasn't over-crowded with ingredients, sugar and additives. Let me tell you, it's really hard!
Eventually I did found the Sprouts Farmers Market brand that was a winner with clean ingredients. Annie's also makes a good one. Still, my issue was the loads of sugar packed into store bought ketchup.
Now that I've been eating healthy for a long time, I can immediately detect in foods the sugar and additives. You become sensitive to it, which is why I make my foods with less sugar.
When I looked at the label on the Sprouts bottle I had been feeding my boyfriend, I realized how easy it would be for me to make my own homemade low sugar ketchup. One that's flavored and sweetened to my liking, and to my surprise it was so easy I couldn't believe I hadn't been making my own all along.
Healthy Homemade Ketchup
This healthy ketchup takes under two minutes to make. All you do is stir the ingredients together and refrigerate. It's that simple! Not to mention you're probably saving money making your own. This Low Sugar Ketchup makes a ton. I store mine in a mason jar in the refrigerator. It's lasts forever.
The best part about this recipe is you can make it your own, and not have to worry about messing it up. Want thinner ketchup? Add more water! Want more flavor? Add paprika or cayenne pepper for a kick! Want more sweetness? Add more sugar!
This Low Sugar Ketchup is a basic homemade recipe that can be jazzed up in many ways. A classic condiment with a healthy makeover!
In case you're wondering why I'm posting a ketchup recipe in October, it's because one - it's still 90 degrees in Phoenix and we're over here eating burgers and friends, and two - I've got a veggie packed meatloaf coming at you this week!
Low Sugar Ketchup

- 4 tablespoons water
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir together until smooth. Note, you may add more water to get the desired consistency you want.

Notes
- Recipe makes 2 cups.
- A serving size equals 2 tbsp. There's 16 tablespoons (servings) total in the recipe.

I’m trying this tomorrow! I’ve been looking for a low sugar ketchup recipe but everything uses artificial sweeteners and I just can’t get around the fact that natural sweeteners, in moderation, seem to be a much more a balanced choice.

YUM YUM! I am a weirdo who eating spinach and ketchup ALL THE TIME. I eat sugar-free ketchup because the typical stuff is just LOADED with sugar and it's crazy to me! I must try your version but find a maple syrup replacement! I am on it 🙂

Hey friend! I'm sure you could sub dates in this one. Just need to pop them in a blender with the other ingredients.

Thanks so much for this recipe. Yup, finding ketchup w/o high fructose corn syrup in particular is difficult, but the absence of THAT puts a lot of sugar in its place. I'll make this for sure!

Hope you like it. Remember it's customizable so you can add as much or little as you want!

That does look easy! I used to get the splenda sweetened version when I first started eating healthier, turns out that's just as bad!
