1 Critical Thing You Need for Weight Loss

Published: Jun 26, 2014 · Modified: Nov 10, 2016 by Megan

People ask me all the time how I lost weight and the answer is really simple. I accepted responsibility for my weight loss. I made choices in life that led me to be overweight. No one is responsible for the decisions I make in my job or the feelings I have every day so why would anyone except me be responsible for my body, health or happiness? Once I got over that, I realized I was in control of my transformation.

The fact of the matter is there is no shortcut to losing weight. Weight loss takes time, dedication, perseverance and determination. One of the reasons I think people are unsuccessful in weight loss is because everyone’s always looking for a quick fix. I’m sorry, but there’s no magic potion or pill that will make you lose weight.

The number one thing you must have to lose weight is MOTIVATION.  Motivation can’t be bought. It can’t be surgically implanted. It can’t be taken every morning with a glass of water. Motivation comes from you loving yourself, having confidence and believing that you are capable of accomplishing anything.  If you love yourself enough, you will push yourself through tough times and believe me, you will have them.

Self motivation is being mentally strong. It’s about visualization which I absolutely believe in. If you’ve ever raced before, you know part of finishing a race is visualizing the finish line. It doesn’t matter how physically strong you are or how hard you trained. If you’re head isn’t in the game, you won’t accomplish your goals. Visualize who you want to become. Be your own cheerleader.

Weight loss is a personal journey. That journey will continue even after you lose weight. Being fit, healthy and happy, is a way of life. It requires consistency and dedication. You will have ups and downs, gains and losses and everything in between. You simply need to keep pushing yourself though. It’s never too late to start or to start over. Every day is a brand new opportunity to transform your life.

Yes! Weight loss is a personal journey. In my opinion, weight loss doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated. A few simple habit changes could make a big difference over the long term

Well said Megan. I lost over 250 lbs through diet changes and exercise. I started running and found that registering for races kept me motivated to continue the journey and stay committed. I think that each person needs to decide for themselves to make a change. The individual needs to realize that change is possible and that having a happy and healthier life is possible.

Well said. It's confidence because I'm pretty sure I look the same day-in and day-out.

I think that loving yourself and really internalizing the idea that you deserve a happier healthier life is one of the most important things when it comes to making any sort of change. I've never had to lose a lot of weight, but I had to GAIN a lot when I was recovering from my eating disorder, and constantly reminding myself that I'm worth it and that I deserve better really helped.

It's hard accepting ourselves. It's a struggle every day for me.
