How To Jumpstart Weight Loss
If you want to lose weight, I'm guessing you're looking for a magic pill to do it for you, and I'm sorry to say that doesn't exist. BUT! What I'm about to tell you is you already have a magic weight loss pill that you can control and it's called eating.

Not only is weight a reflection of how much you eat, but what you eat.
#1 You can count calories all day long, but if you're not eating in a way to signal your body to burn fat, you may never see change.
#2 You can workout until you pass out, keel over or drop dead and it will never get you to your goal either. Weight loss is 20% fitness, 80% diet. Being active is important, but ultimately you are a reflection of what you eat.
As a teenager, I tried losing weight many times and failed. I attempted every fad diet imaginable, ate carrot and celery sticks, restricted calories, did every at home video. I never had success and always teeter tottered with my weight.

Growing up I ate a high carbohydrate diet after my Dad had heart problems and doctors advised a higher carb diet.
As a {now} nutritionist I recognize this "trains" your cells to store fat and rely on carbohydrates for energy instead of burning fat. To this day, I have to be careful about eating too many carbs because of how my body treats them. It's like a fat festival on my hips and thighs!
The body gets very lazy on high carbohydrate diets. It loves to rely on carbs coming into the body as the primary energy source instead of burning stored fat. Also, if you eat more carbohydrates than your body needs, it's stored as fat. Studies are now showing eating carbohydrates in excess causes fat storage, and has been linked to the rise of obesity. I'm the perfect example of that.

Today when people ask me how I lost 80 pounds 7 years ago, I tell them "I watched my portions, counted calories and walked every day." But what I forget to tell them is...
One really important thing I did to jump start my weight loss.
Lowering carbohydrates for a period of time to force my body into fat burning mode.
For some people, their body won't drop pounds by reducing calories alone, exercising and eating healthy. It needs a little jump start in the right direction.
Think of jump starting weight loss as training your body to burn stored fat as fuel.
This is by no means a promotion for the Paleo or Atkins diet. In fact, those diets can be tricky. While you will lose weight, it's primarily water weight. When you go back to eating carbs, you'll regain the weight. In my opinion {and experience}, it's better to teach yourself to eat the right type of carbohydrates in moderation and a bit lower than recommended amounts to achieve a sustainable weight loss.
**Note** this advice is not medically appropriate for everyone. For example, if you have thyroid problems, are training for a marathon, etc., you need more carbohydrates in your diet. It's important to note that eating lower carbohydrates must also be balanced with the right fats and proteins. Check with a nutritionist or medical professional before changing your diet.

Hi Megan! I found this post very informative, thank you! Can you explain the reasoning why lowering carbs isn't recommended for people with thyroid issues? I take medication for hyperthyroidism and just wondered why that would be the case. Thank you!
Megan says
Hi Kim! Great question! Carbs are necessary for several bodily functions but the thyroid in particular can be sensitive to it. The thyroid does many different things. For example, reverse T3 may come up abnormally high on a blood panel (which by the way most doctors don't test for) and it causes weight gain, sleepiness, cold. It can also effect T4 to T3 conversion. If you're going to eat lower carbs, you have to slowly reduce them to not effect the thyroid and the hormones it produces. Hope this helps.

Who doesn’t need to jumpstart weight loss? I know I do. I’ve been putting off getting serious about losing weight for the summer, but now I have nowhere to hide, nowhere to run, I have to start this week, or I’ll be pissed at myself during bikini season. I also have to watch my carb intake but I don’t want to omit carbs altogether. You get me! 🙂 To totally get me 🙂
Megan says
I'm glad you found it helpful Mary! And I feel the same way about bikini season coming soon.

I couldn't agree more about it being far more about diet than exercise. Exercise is obviously important for a healthy heart, lungs, etc - but in the end, it's about the food you're consuming for sure!! Far too many people do NOT know this!
Megan says
So true! I think it's easy for those of us in this space to forget that. P.S. I love your new site girly!

I just found your blog and I am binge reading it 🙂 I feel like it is just what I needed to read right now. Thank you! Q-why do you say to never eat peanuts? I usually go for unsalted mixed raw nuts, but was wondering if there is something with peanuts I should know. Thanks! 🙂
Megan says
Hi Lindsay! Welcome! Almonds have just a bit less saturated fat than peanuts which is important for weight loss. Peanuts aren't bad just not as good a source (in my opinion) of fat as almonds.
Brooke @ wreckingroutine says
Yes! Weight loss is all about lifestyle change, not dieting! I tell my clients this all the time.
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Good recommendations! It is so important to eat whole healthy foods and not restrict your calories.

This is a great post - and this is truly what is working for me now. I am measuring my portions and cutting out sugar and those "not so healthy" carbs! The scale is finally moving in the right direction. Great advise!
Linda @ Fit Fed and Happy says
Agreed! I cut out all carbs and I feel much better already without those sugar crashes and the number has been dropping 🙂
Megan says
thanks

I also tried and tested many diets and never worked. I had to be very strict at the beginning and replaced some of my meals with meal replacement shakes. I was determined to keep going and really tried to find a balance. I actually didn't cut carbs but learned to eat smaller portions. Like you said you have to find what works for you because there is no black or white with weight loss....
Megan says
That is awesome! I wish I wouldn't have to cut my carbs. Everyone's body is processes things differently.
