Funny how one injury leads to another. Remember that elbow thing? My physical therapist was working on it for weeks and it just wasn’t getting better. She said tennis elbow can be pesky & it needed special attention. By the way, I don’t play tennis. Haha…bad joke. My PT referred me to to an elbow specialist whom I couldn’t get an appointment with for 6 weeks. Health Care is very caring. As I waited patiently for my arm appointment, my PT referred me to an occupational arm therapist. When I saw the OT, she said I can’t do anything for you until it’s x-rayed and we know it’s not fractured. I had to explain to her the 6 week thing and that my pain was too high to put off treatment so she did her OT thing on my arm then put in me a thousand arm sleeves (ok it was 3) & a wrist brace to immobilize the tendons.
My PT had already done many of those things, but they only helped temporarily. I’d feel better 1 or 2 days before the pain would come back. The arm sleeves didn’t help much except at night when my pain is worst. I sleep on that side by habit and wake up during the night in a lot of pain from laying on it. Oddly enough this is exactly what my ankle did at night and that turned out to be a stress fracture. I finally saw the specialist two weeks ago. He confirmed it’s tennis elbow, but can’t be sure without an MRI. I passed on the MRI. I can’t mentally deal with more tests right now.
This brings me back to one injury leads to another. As it turns out, my ankle injury is a result of my foot injury. As the foot was healing, it put strain on the ankle and my femur weakened also putting strain on the ankle. My right leg was already a weak from a 15 year old femur injury that was never strengthened properly. My femur and hip weakened significantly with being immobilized in a boot so long. You lose strength so fast. When I had PT for my foot last year, no one put the pieces of the puzzle together that the femur and hip needed strengthening to support the limb. Fifteen years ago I never had PT post op on my femur (the doctor never even suggested it & I was too young to know to ask). All this time my body’s compensated for this and not in a good way. It’s been a point of weakness ever since.
When I began PT for my ankle, my therapist put the whole picture together realizing that point of weakness was the cause for everything else I have going on. Bad trunk = bad limb. I’ve been working really hard to strength it. I won’t lie. It’s been hard work and very painful. Trying to break 15 year old scar tissue & make things work that haven’t in that long just isn’t fun, but my PT said if I don’t work on it now I’m going to have more problems with my foot and back. I may be healed from the stress fracture, but I have a long road of recovery ahead of me.
How does this tie back to the elbow? While my lower extremity’s were healing, I took up swimming. I wasn’t a swimmer before unless you count lounging by the pool. I swam as a kid and knew the basics well enough to start and my level of fitness helped me progress quickly. I also have many triathlete friends at my gym that helped me learn. I sort of suspected swimming was the culprit of my elbow pain. I stopped swimming a few weeks back and noticed my elbow was feeling better. I asked a friend to observe my stroke and confirm my theory. Sure enough I’m not using my hips. I’m dragging. What happens when you don’t engage hips when you swim? You strain the upper body, primarily the shoulder and elbow. Everything ties back to that darn femur injury. It’s like the ghost of injury past that won’t stop haunting me.
Currently I have three therapists (one for the foot, one for the arm, one for dry needling) soon to be four. The fourth is for a gait analysis I have to do to find out how I’m walking and see what corrections can be made. All due to a bum femur. Maybe I should have my femur looked at? My PT’s been gently discussing this with me. It kinda brings back bad memories and with everything I’ve been through I’m not ready to tackle that just yet. I have enough therapists and doctors for now and truthfully we’ll never get to this beautiful recipe if I keep talking. Writing this and looking at all these gorgeous pictures makes me wanna eat. Asian Sesame Chicken & Broccoli
- 1 pound chicken breast cut into 1 inch pieces
- 2 bags or 3 1/2 cups of fresh pre-cut broccoli, can also buy frozen and thaw in advance
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil
- 1 1/2 tbsp arrowroot powder
- 3 tbsp coconut aminos or soy sauce
- 3 tbsp white rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp coconut sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp red pepper chili flakes
- 1/2 tsp ginger
- salt/pepper to taste
- Optional: Sriracha hot sauce
- Warm oil in a large sauté or stir fry pan on the stovetop.
- Add broccoli to pan, stirring frequently cook ~7 minutes until broccoli begins to soften.
- While broccoli is cooking, in a medium bowl whisk together arrowroot powder, coconut aminos, white rice vinegary, water, coconut sugar, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper ginger and garlic. Add chicken to the mixture.
- Next add the chicken with the marinade to the pan with sesame seeds.
- Cook 10 minutes turning frequently until chicken is cooked through.
- Serve & top with sriarcha hot sauce.
