One day I started walking and that one day changed my whole life. This is how I lost 80 pounds walking.
The Beginning of a New Life
My 80 pound weight loss didn’t begin with a diet. It began with a walk. In fact, weight loss wasn’t even a thought in my mind. At that time in my life, I was feeling particularly unhappy and insecure working as a consultant in California unsure of my future, unhappy that I’d sacrificed so much of my personal life to corporate America. One night after a particularly stressful day, a coworker suggested I go to the beach to think.
When I arrived, I saw a path on the strand where people were walking and running. I hadn’t been active in over decade due to my avascular necrosis, but something pulled me toward that path. A voice inside me said “you should walk.” So that’s what I did. That night as I walked, I realized for once I didn’t feel strangled by life. I could breathe. I could just be.
After my walk, I looked back at the ocean and thought to myself “I’m going to walk here every night.” And that’s what I did. Every night from that day forward, I walked. The first week 10 minutes, the next month 20 minutes the month after 30 minutes, then 40, 60, 90 and eventually I was walking 8-9 miles.
Today I’m sharing 3 Things You Need For Healthy Weight Loss, three very important things! Before I share them, here’s why they’re important.
Last week I shared this video on the watch out’s on calorie counting with apps. Many of my one-on-one clients use apps to calculate calories and I spend a lot of time educating them the dangers of using apps to calculate calories for weight loss.
A client recently watched the free training on jumpstarting weight loss and asked me why you stop losing weight on low calorie diets. She’d been using MyFitness Pal which calculated her caloric intake for her weight loss to be 1300 calories a day. The first few months she was losing weight, then nothing. No movement on the scale for weeks. She couldn’t understand why she wasn’t losing weight.
Everything we’re told about weight loss is that you have to eat fewer calories to lose weight. But the truth is, weight loss is not as simple as “calories in, calories out.” In fact, I did my research paper on “calories in, calories out” for my nutrition capstone. It’s much more complex than this, and today I’ll cover one reason why.

Seven years ago I lost 80 pounds and managed to keep it off. I’m frequently asked how I keep the weight off because a lot of people who lose weight gain it back. This can be for various reasons.
Maybe they ate too few calories during their weight loss. This causes metabolism to slow down, or they haven’t sustained healthy habits, have emotional eating issues, or medical conditions (i.e. hormones, diabetes, etc.) affecting hunger and how their body utilizes and stores fat.
Today I’m sharing the things I do to keep the weight off. While these do not guarantee weight loss, they promote a healthy lifestyle which is really how long term weight loss is achieved.
Years ago I set out on the most amazing journey of my life, and lost 80 pounds. Being overweight and living an unhealthy lifestyle most of my life, I committed myself to get healthy and living active. I lost 80 pounds, not by choice but through commitment. After committing to eating right and exercising for over a year, I went from a size 14 to a size 2 and lost 80 pounds.
Looking back, I see my weight loss was a pivotal moment in my life. It transformed me beyond my physical body. It changed my view of the world, taught me that weight does not define your self worth and led me to pursue my ultimate dream goals. I learned to cook healthy recipes, became a food photographer, writer, nutrition practitioner, and group fitness instructor. If it were not for my 80 pound weight loss, you would not see the woman you see today.
More importantly, I discovered who I am and learned to love myself.
After struggling with my food and weight practically my entire life, I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to experience a healthy way of living. It’s made me a better person and I want to share my story to inspire you. Weight loss is truly a cumulation of small lifestyle changes and sticking with them for a long period of time. It’s a lifestyle, not a diet. Here’s how I lost 80 pounds.
